In a promising development for the residents of Guwahati, Assam Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Ashok Singhal, has announced robust measures to mitigate the perennial issue of flooding and waterlogging in the city. Singhal’s recent declarations during a pivotal meeting of the Department of Housing & Urban Affairs (DoHUA) in Guwahati have stirred hope and anticipation among the populace.

Singhal’s assurances come on the heels of a comprehensive report on the annual flash floods in Guwahati, which has been diligently compiled by relevant officers. Speaking at the meeting, Singhal vowed that all channels facilitating water outflow would undergo thorough cleansing before the advent of Bohag Bihu, a significant festival observed in April.

“This year, Guwahati will witness a reprieve from flooding, as all channels facilitating water outflow from the city will be cleared before Bohag Bihu,” Singhal affirmed. Furthermore, he articulated plans to resolve the city’s drinking water woes by the year 2024. Through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) water supply project, fresh drinking water will be extended to all corners of Guwahati, with an aim to complete the distribution by June-July this year.

The minister wasted no time in translating words into action, as a commendable initiative saw 20,000 houses in Guwahati receiving drinking water supply connections on the very day of the cabinet meeting.

Taking to platform ‘X’, Singhal reiterated his commitment to the cause by sharing updates on the progress of ongoing measures under the “Mission Flood Free Guwahati”. He urged officials of DoHUA to accelerate their efforts to ensure Guwahati is rendered flood-free before the onset of the monsoon season.

Singhal’s proactive stance towards tackling the age-old issue of flooding in Guwahati underscores the government’s unwavering dedication to the welfare of its citizens. The initiation of tangible projects and the swift implementation of schemes demonstrate a resolute effort to transform promises into palpable improvements in the lives of the people.

As the initiatives gain momentum and the vision of a flood-free Guwahati inches closer to realization, Singhal’s leadership stands as a beacon of hope, inspiring confidence in the collective ability to surmount challenges and usher in a brighter, more resilient future for the city and its inhabitants.
