The momentous Centenary Celebration of Cottonian
the revered annual journal of Cotton University (formerly Cotton College), reached its culmination with a closing ceremony held at the University premises today. Renowned social scientist and Andy Matsui Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Asian University for Women, Bangladesh, Prof. Sanjib Baruah graced the occasion as the esteemed guest speaker. His enlightening discourse, titled ‘The Year of the Apollo Moon Landing in Cotton College: Memories and Reflections,’ delved into historical events intertwined with the publication’s legacy.
Prof. Baruah, who served as the editor of Cottonian during 1968-69, shared poignant recollections of the iconic year when humans first set foot on the moon. Reflecting on the complexity of memories, he questioned who determines historical significance, emphasizing the curiosity that fueled his academic pursuits. In the engaging question-and-answer session, Prof. Baruah encouraged students to cultivate curiosity and challenge established perspectives.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Ramesh Chandra Deka highlighted the magazine’s unique milestone, stating, “Cottonian magazine, inaugurated in 1922, stands as one of the few publications in Assam to complete a century. It has played a pivotal role as a platform for intellectual discourse and artistic expression.”
The program, organized by the University in collaboration with the Cotton University Students’ Union (CUSU), was attended by former editors, alumni, officials, faculty members, and students. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by CUSU General Secretary Javed Akhtar.
