High Court relocation sparks controversy: Gauhati High Court Bar Association raises alarms

The Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) has expressed deep concern over the Assam government’s controversial move to shift the Gauhati High Court to Rangmahal in North Guwahati.

In a press release dated 7 February 2024, the GHCBA expressed its displeasure with the decision, citing a lack of consultation with stakeholders and doubts about its feasibility. The association expressed displeasure over Assam Law Minister Ranjit Kumar Dass’ contradictory remarks in the state assembly, which appeared to be a departure from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s earlier promise.

According to the GHCBA, the state government has promised a thorough land survey to assess the feasibility of relocating the new bridge connecting North Guwahati to Guwahati once it is completed. The association had earlier protested against the Prime Minister’s action and organised a rally, garnering support from several legal circles and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the city. Then on September 30, 2023, a meeting was held with representatives of the Gauhati High Court Bar and representatives of the Chief Minister’s Office. The GHCBA was surprised by the recent revelations by the Minister of Justice, saying it had not been officially notified of any decision by the state government in relation to the move.

In response to this, the GHCBA called on the Minister of Justice to provide a clear explanation to the General Assembly as soon as possible. The association emphasizes the importance of transparency and effective communication on important issues that directly affect the legal community and the general public.
