“A Call for Stability and Ethical Governance in Indian Wrestling”

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is currently navigating troubled waters, with the recent suspension of the newly elected management, led by Sanjay Singh, triggering a storm of controversy. In response, the Sports Ministry has stepped in, addressing the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and urging the formation of a temporary panel to oversee the affairs of the WFI during this tumultuous period.

In a letter from Tarun Pareek, undersecretary to the Centre, serious concerns about the governance and integrity of the WFI were expressed. The Sports Ministry emphasized the need for immediate corrective measures to uphold the principles of good governance in sports organizations, placing the responsibility on the IOA to establish a temporary committee.

At the heart of the matter is the perceived influence and control of former WFI office bearers, raising questions about the organization’s direction. The Sports Ministry insists that these measures are crucial to prevent any adverse impact on wrestlers and to safeguard the principles of good governance within the sports body.

The temporary panel, once formed, is expected to take charge of day-to-day affairs, including the crucial task of athlete selection. This intervention aims to ensure that wrestlers are not adversely affected by the ongoing dispute and that the governance of the WFI is not compromised.

The controversy surrounding the WFI has its roots in accusations against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a six-time BJP MP. Singh stepped aside after allegations of sexual harassment by prominent wrestlers, including Sakshee Malikkh, Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia, and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat. Despite promises that close aides and relatives of Singh would not be permitted to contest polls, Sanjay Singh’s nomination was cleared, leading to a victory in the recent WFI election against Commonwealth Games gold medallist Anita Sheoran, who was backed by the protesting wrestlers.

The Sports Ministry’s intervention underscores the urgent need for stability and ethical governance within the WFI. The formation of a temporary panel by the IOA is a crucial step towards addressing the current crisis, ensuring the well-being of athletes, and upholding the principles of good governance in Indian sports organizations.

In conclusion, as the wrestling community awaits the resolution of this dispute, the spotlight is on the IOA to appoint a capable and neutral temporary panel that can guide the WFI through these challenging times and restore faith in the governance of Indian wrestling.
