NCTE and Cotton University organises Open House Discussion on NEP 2020

Digital Desk: The National Council for Teachers’ Education (NCTE) in collaboration with Cotton University organized an Open House Discussion on New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 with emphasis on NPST and NMM at Sudmersen Hall, Cotton University from 9:30 AM onwards here today.

The NEP envisions India regaining the coveted position of global dominance. It enables educational institutions to develop a system that directly contributes to the country’s transformation into a global knowledge superpower.  The open house discussion intended to enlighten and explore the sphere of NEP 2020 with focus on NPST (para 5.20) and NMM (para 15.11).

The discussion commenced with the lighting of the lamp and introduction of dignitaries present on and off the dais by Dr Sangeeta Barthakur from Cotton University. In the Inaugural Ceremony, the welcome address was delivered by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Cotton University, Prof. Bhabesh Chandra Goswami. This was followed and fostered by the wise words of Kesang Y Sherpa, Member Secretary NCTE, Prof. Nilima Bhagabati, Chairperson, ERC, NCTE and B Kalyan Chakravarthy, Principal Secretary (Education), Government of Assam.

The open house discussion was initiated by Mr Rishab Khanna, reputed cognitive scientist who moderated Panel I which was on ‘National Professional Standard for Teachers (NPST)’. The programme was further nurtured with the Panel II on ‘National Mentorship Mission (NMM)’ in the second half moderated by Khusboo Awasthi.

The open house discussion largely devoted to reflect the ground realities and a collective consensus on addressing how NEP 2020 will prove to be a pivotal point in terms of meeting the country’s inclusive development goals while also establishing a robust community . It brought into light a shift toward multi-disciplinary education, away from rigid silos of ‘arts,’ ‘science,’ and ‘commerce’ streams, with renewed focus on 21st century skills  for holistic, critical, discovery, discussion and analysis-based learning.

The list of eminent panelists for the event included Prof. Utpal Sharma, Ghanashyam Medhi, Dr MK Mahanta, Prabha Dastidar, Mausumi Mahanta, Dr Tarali Pathak, Prof. Bibhash Choudhury, Dr Tulika Dey and Dr Nirada Devi who endorsed the session with their meaningful deliberations which provided pertinent points for reflection and suggestions that would contribute to the successful implementation of the recommendations embedded in NPST and NMM.

The session ended with a vote of thanks by Dr Muktikam Hazarika. The audience appreciated the constructive platform that the open house discussion provided to them while expressing gratitude and interest in further association with the University.
