Fire at COVID hospital claims 4 lives in Mumbai

Mumbai: AT least four patients being treated for COVID-19 at Sunrise Hospital in Mumbai’s Bhandup West dies in a fire past midnight which occurred at the hospital on Friday. While 70 others were rescued, bodies of two more were recovered.


Dr. Hafeez Rehman, CEO of Sunrise Hospital said some patients were missing following the incident and efforts were underway to identify them. He also added that the families of the deceased who died of Covid-19 had ben informed of their deaths prior to the fire.


Following the incident, 30 patients were shifted to Mulund Jumbo centre, a COVID-19 treatment facility where four are in serious condition. The other patients were admitted to different hospitals, while non-Covid patients were shifted to Fortis Hospital.


The hospital said that its fire alarms were set off by the smoke, following which all patients were evacuated from the building to a fire refuge area. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained as per Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar.
